Munki Brain $8.78 Yes, “pop-punk” has gone light years beyond the point of parody and annoyance by the early 21st century. It seems like every time you switch on MTV, there’s some new group of barely pubescent gentlemen with spiffy duds and freshly primped Mohawks performing singalong nursery songs. But a band like the Queers is a different beast entirely, as they helped create the style that is now commonplace — merging punk riffs with power pop hooks. And they’re still at it on their umpteenth release, 2007′s Munki Brain. Unlike the younger pop-punk bands, the Queers have obviously studied their power pop of yore, as the album-opening “Overdue” sounds like it could have fit on an early Cheap Trick album. But on the other hand, songs such as “Girl About Town” would sound simply dandy being blasted from a stage on the Warped Tour in the mid-afternoon. And you’ve got to love a band that isn’t afraid to let its admiration of surf music and doo wop come shining through, as the band does on “I Can’t Stay Mad at You.” As the Queers prove throughout Munki Brain, not all pop-punk is annoying rubbish. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi Performers: Joe Queer – Guitar, Vocals; Lisa Marr – Vocals; Philip Hill – Vocals, Bass |

200 Word Puzzles $5.64 The human brain is quite remarkable. Its intricate workings have been subjected to some of the greatest intellects of our times and despite this, we still know relatively little about how it actually works. However, there is one fact on which all experts in the field are in agreement: the brain benefits from regular exercise in much the same way as muscles do. In fact the brain not only benefits from this training–it thrives on it. What kind of exercise does the brain enjoy? Here the experts are again in agreement. Creative thinking, deductive reasoning and puzzle solving are all excellent areas for building up your mental muscle. 200 Word Puzzles gives your brain the opportunity for serious regular exercise. Word puzzles are excellent training for the brain as the alphabet can be as full of complexity and surprise as numbers. 3D Dunraven – Red Sea, Egypt Waterproof Dive Site Card $9.95 We had heard from a Red Sea dive guide that the Dunraven sank when the Captain went on a drinking binge having found out that his First Mate was sleeping with his wife. He would not tell the First mate how to navigate, so they hit the reef (we have since been told differently it caught fire and drifted onto the reef ). The wreck now lies in two sections next to each other, both of which are penetrable, but there is not always an entire route through. The large brass propeller lies to the north end of the wreck and the reef to the west. The engine can be found in the northern section of the wreck. The sea life is interesting here and a swim along the reef makes a good end to the dive. Napoleon fish are common, as well as lionfish and flathead scorpion fish. There is a particularly impressive brain coral on the reef as you leave the wreck that is only three meters below the surface. This unique cardprovides detailed depiction of the Dunraven Wreck. Each waterproof card is printed on both sides, made of durable PVC plastic and isdesigned to be taken on the dive. They are also 3-hole punched to fit in standard log books. |
