Advertising Murder $1.99 Jack Elton was having a rough time dealing with his unfair banishment from the Vancouver Police Force and trying to settle into the lonely life of a P.I. until the morning the dead body of a young, pregnant Asian woman is found stabbed to death in the offices of Biggs, Wilberforce, Hutton and Small. The police and the employees of the firm are mystified at the murder—no one seems to know who she is, or why she was in the building that night. All evidence points to Brendan Biggs, a partner in the advertising firm, but Biggs insists he has never seen the girl before. The police are putting the pressure on, so in an act of desperation, Biggs calls on his old friend Jack to help out. A job accepted grudgingly to help out a friend turns into an adventure for the aspiring private eye, as he must determine the victim’s identity, that of her assailant, and the motive for the gruesome crime, while delving into the unfamiliar and closed-to-strangers Asian community of Vancouver, Canada. |

Bertram Windle: The Honan Bequest and the Modernisation of University College Cork, 1904-1919 $24.5 Windle was a privileged participant in Irish public affairs with friends in the British Government, Dublin Castle, the Irish Parliamentary Party, the Gaelic League and the Catholic Church. The son of a Church of Ireland rector, he studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin. A convert to Catholicism in the early 1880s, he became a Professor of Anatomy in Birmingham, helping to found Birmingham University. He took up his post as President of Queen’s College Cork in 1904, transforming the university during the following decade and a half into a modern institution with an enhanced curriculum, more staff, a growing student body and new buildings and facilities. He was responsible for the building of the Honan Hostel and Honan chapel. Windle viewed with great concern the rise of radical nationalism and the growth of Sinn Féin. He was a strong supporter of the British government’s participation in World War 1, a critic of the 1916 rising, and a member of the Irish Convention which sought to resolve the “Irish question” in 1917/1918. Windle had no sympathy for the new radical nationalist coalition which contested the general election of 1918. In the context of the decline of the Irish Parliamentary Party and the rise of Sinn Féin led by Eamon de Valera, he launched his second unsuccessful bid to establish an autonomous university of Munster. Thwarted by a combination of nationalist intransigence and the weakness of the British government, he left Ireland for Canada in 1919 thoroughly disillusioned by the politics of UCC, the Irish Catholic Church and the emerging independent Irish state.Students of Irish history, politics, culture, society and education will find the work of interest together with those who wish to see Windle in his role as a scientist and commentator on evolution and on religious matters. Windle, given his background and formation, provides a unique view of Irish politics, history and education. The work is all the more |

British Columbia Students’ Associations: University of Victoria Students’ Society, Simon Fraser Student Society $10.09 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS), founded in 1963, is a student society that represents all undergraduate students at the University of Victoria. The Society operates several businesses and provides services to students in the Student Union Building (SUB). The Society advocates on behalf of students on important issues such as increasing accessibility to education, racism, affordable public transportation and environmental sustainability. In addition, the UVSS helps to provide a discounted “Universal Bus Pass” (UPass) to students. The Society administers clubs and course unions and also organizes several events on- and off-campus. The UVSS is a member local of the Canadian Federation of Students, which, in terms of membership, is Canada’s largest student lobbying organization. The Board of Directors is the decision-making body for the Society and directs all work of the Society. The board is composed of student representatives elected from the student body. The board is made up of: Board members are elected annually in March and advocacy reps are nominated by their groups and approved of by the board. The Students’ Society was first incorporated in 1964, just one year after the creation of the University of Victoria (UVic) itself, as the Alma Mater Society of the University of Victoria (AMS). The AMS took its name from student associations like the University of British Columbia and McGill University, to which Victoria College (UVic’s predecessor) was affiliated. The name was changed in 1989 to make clearer what the organization actually is, a student union. Students at the newly founded UVic already had their own building and a ready-made students’ society, as students at Victoria College (now the home of Camosun College)… More: |

Buildings and Structures in Greenland: Igloo, Church of Hvalsey, Globecom Tower, Angissq Loran-C Transmitter, Katuaq Culture Centre $9.16 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Igloo, Church of Hvalsey, Globecom Tower, Angissq Loran-C Transmitter, Katuaq Culture Centre, Ameralik Span, Godthåbhallen, Nanortalik Church. Excerpt: An igloo (Inuit language: iglu, Inuktitut syllabics: , “house”, plural: iglooit or igluit) or snowhouse is a type of shelter built out of snow, originally built by the Inuit. Iglu is the Inuit word for a house or home built out of any material, and is not restricted exclusively to snowhouses, but includes traditional tents, sod houses, homes constructed of driftwood and modern buildings. Outside of Inuit society, however, “igloo” refers exclusively to shelters constructed out of blocks of compacted snow, generally in the form of a dome. Although igloos are usually associated with all Inuit, they were predominantly constructed by people of Canada’s Central Arctic and Greenland’s Thule area. Other Inuit people tended to use snow to insulate their houses, which were constructed from whalebone and hides. Snow is used because the air pockets trapped in it make it an insulator. On the outside, temperatures may be as low as 45 °C (49.0 °F), but on the inside the temperature may range from 7 °C (19 °F) to 16 °C (61 °F) when warmed by body heat alone. There are three traditional types of igloos, all of different sizes and all used for different purposes. An igloo side view diagram; opening to the right, optional window may be composed of an ice block An igloo’s snowbrick laying method. Process of building an igloo with snowbrick method in mid-way. A nearly complete, medium-sized igloo. Note the excavation under the door and the unfinished exterior The snow used to build an igloo must have sufficient structural strength to be cut and stacked in the appropriate manner. Canadian Labour Congress $48 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Canadian Labour Congress, or CLC (in French “le Congrès du travail du Canada” or CTC) is a national trade union center, the central labour body in Canada to which most Canadian labour unions are affiliated. The CLC was founded on April 23, 1956 through a merger of the Trades and Labour Congress of Canada (TLC) and the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL), the two major labour congresses in Canada at the time. The TLC’s affiliated unions represented workers in a specific trade while the CCL’s affiliated unions represented all employees within a workplace, regardless of occupation. The trades-based organizational model, which strongly continues today especially in the building and construction industries, is based in older European traditions that can be traced back to guilds. However, with industrialization came the creation of a new group of workers without specific trades qualifications and, therefore, without ready access to the representation offered by the TLC’s affiliates. In response, these workers adopted the industrial model of union organization and formed the CCL as their umbrella aorganization. |

History Pottery in the region began around 1849, after John Caldwell Bloomfield inherited his father’s estate. Seeking to provide employment for his tenants, who had been affected by the Irish potato famine and, being an amateur minerologist , he ordered a geological survey of his land. On finding that the area was rich in minerals, Bloomfield went into partnership with London architect Robert Williams Armstrong and Dublin merchant David McBirney. In setting up a pottery business, Bloomfield managed to get a railway line built to Belleek so that coal could be delivered with which to fire kilns. Belleek Pottery Headquarters.Building started on the pottery in 1858. Initially starting with domestic products, it wasn’t until 1863 that small amounts of the Parian porcelain for which Belleek is famous for to this day, was successfully produced. By 1865, the prestige of the company had increased enough that its market included Ireland , England , the United States , Canada and Australia , and clients included the Prince of Wales , Queen Victoria and the nobility . Acquisitions The original owners had all died by 1884, and a local group of investors acquired the concern and named it Belleek Pottery Works Company Ltd . Dirt Oval Racing Venues in Canada: Emo Speedway, Emo Speedway Championships, Castrol Raceway, Humberstone Speedway, Ohsweken Speedway $8.87 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Emo Speedway is a 3/8ths, high banked, dirt oval racetrack located in Emo, Ontario in Northwestern Ontario, Canada. It is located right inside the town on Colonization Road. Behind the racetrack is the Rainy River Agricultural Society Fair Grounds. The track is located 30 km west of Fort Frances, and 52 km east of Rainy River along the border of Northern Minnesota, USA. The speedway was built in 1954 and hosted its season opener on July 30 of the same year. The original name for the track was Emo Speedway (According to the Fort Frances Times), although the name Emo Raceway(s) was also used. Currently, Emo Speedway runs three divisions (classes) of cars. They include WISSOTA Modifieds, WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, and Street Stocks. The season runs from Mid-May to Mid-September. The Borderland Racing Association (BRA) is the Promoting Body of Emo Speedway. The BRA is a non-profit organization that operates under volunteer support and monetary sponsorship. The idea of building a racetrack in Emo was brought up in 1952, but it wouldn’t be until 1954 when things would really heat up. In May 1954, a small group of people had meetings to organize the construction of the track. It was decided in those meetings that it was to be built inside the already built horse track which is approximately 3/4 mile long. With help from the Emo Chamber of Commerce, the track became a reality. The track was built as a fifth of a mile oval dirt oval. The decision for using clay instead of paved asphalt was due to the softer compound. This allowed the track to be more advantageous for drivers and spectators. There would be a less chance of serious accidents and the loose dirt would allow more skidding which let the cars permit more bumping and nudging while fighting f… More: |

Chapters: Mount Douglas Secondary School, Glenlyon Norfolk School, Victoria High School, L’école Brodeur, Oak Bay Secondary School, Reynolds Secondary School. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Nulla Praemia Sine Opera (Latin for “No Reward without Effort”) Mount Douglas Secondary School is a traditional four-year public secondary school located in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada, and serving the Greater Victoria School District. Its common local nickname is “Mount Doug.” With a student body of around twelve hundred, Mount Doug is considered an average-sized high school for Greater Victoria. Academically, Mount Doug is consistently ranked as one of the best fifty public schools across the nation. The school is also known for its sports teams. Due to the short distance between the Greater Victoria area and Western Washington, the Junior Varsity and Varsity football teams often travel south to the United States to compete against more teams that offer stronger competition, usually coming home with a win. The senior boys soccer team has enjoyed considerable success since the establishment of the school. This team has come close on numerous occasions to qualifying for AAA provincials. Although Mount Doug may excel in all sports teams, the RAMS Senior Volleyball team has placed first on numerous occasions in B.C. and many of the team members have placed very high in Canada. Mount Doug is also known for their students’ excellent academics. The current Mount Doug building is in desperate need of expansion and renovation, as well as seismic upgrades for safety. A new fine arts wing, auditorium and cafeteria have been proposed, and construction was scheduled to begin in 2008, but no plans have been finalized as of September 2010. History Of The Huguenot Emigration To America (Volume 1) $26.44 Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:Chap. i. Acadia was now lost to the Jesuits ; and some 1613- time must yet elapse before they could obtain 1621 possession of Canada. The commercial interests of France were still controlled largely, as they continued to be for many years, by Huguenot merchants; and in order to the prosecution of the important trade with the New World, the capital and enterprise of the great companies of La Rochelle, Rouen and Dieppe were indispensably needed. Hence, though the Prince of Conde” was succeeded as viceroy of New France by the Duke of Montmorency, an open enemy of the Huguenots, no attempt was made as yet to exclude them from the colonies. In 1621, the duke, dissatisfied with the man- agement of the trade with Canada, conferred the monopoly of that trade upon a body of mer- ency- chants to be known as the Compagnie Montmorency. At the head of this company was Guill- aume de Caen, sieur de la Mothe, a Huguenot of Dieppe.1 De Caen was at once an enterprising merchant and an experienced navigator. Bred to the sea, he had already made many a trip, under his father’s direction, to the banks of Newfoundland. His able administration soon raised the new company to a height of prosperity such as none of its predecessors had reached. Royal favors were showered upon it. Privilege after privilege was granted, in utter disregard of the rights previously conferred upon the older associations. International Heritage and Historic Building Conservation $125 The majority of books in English on historic building conservation and heritage preservation training are often restricted to Western architecture and its origins. Consequently, the history of building conservation, the study of contemporary paradigms and case studies in most universities and within wider interest circles, predominantly in the UK, Europe, and USA focus mainly on Europe and sometimes the USA, although the latter is often excluded from European publications. With an increasingly multicultural student body in Euro-American universities and with a rising global interest in heritage preservation, there is an urgent need for publications to cover a larger geographical and social area including not only Asia, Australia, Africa and South America but also previously neglected countries in Europe like the new members of the European Community and the northern neighbour of the USA, Canada. The inclusion of the ‘other’ in built environment education in general and in building conservation in particular is a pre-requisite of cultural interaction and widening participation.International Heritage and Historic Building Conservation assesses successful contemporary conservation paradigms from around the world. The book evaluates conservation case studies from previously excluded areas of the world to create an integrated account of Historic Building Conservation that crosses the boundaries of language and culture and sets an example for further inclusive research. Analyzing the influence of financial constraints, regional conflicts, and cultural differences on the heritage of disadvantaged countries, this leading-edge volume is essential for researchers and students of heritage studies interested in understanding their topics in a wider framework. |

Pedway $42.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Pedways are elevated or underground walkways, often connecting urban high-rises to each other, other buildings, or the street. They provide quick and comfortable movement from building to building, away from traffic and inclement weather. Two of the largest networks of underground walkways are located in Canada. RÉSO in Montreal and PATH in Toronto each consist of approximately 30 km of underground walkways in the heart of their respective city centres. A walkway is a composite or umbrella term for all formal surfaces which support the act of walking. This includes sidewalks, trails, paths, stairs, ramps and open paseos or passageways. The walkway is a path for walking that is generally not enclosed. It can be at ground level, or it can be elevated, such as a boardwalk, or a floating dock/trail. It can be a simple constructed path or something more complex to cross a road or a body of water. An open pedestrian overpass or a special tunnel is also an element of a walkway. It can also be used to board and remove passengers from aircraft to the terminal building. |
